This hike may be tricky to start with but is worth the effort for its woodland pastures and walk back through 100% Savoie hamlets.
Nature and Heritage: a forest made up mainly of spruce trees is called a "pessière". The spruce is our Christmas tree with its own prickly needles! Up close, you can see that the needles are around the branch that cones hang from. The tree produces acidic humus which means undergrowth can struggle to grow but blueberries thrive. However, for the last few years the European spruce bark beetle has been drying out entire plots of the forest.
Route details: leave your car on Lullin village square and head for the Hôtel de l'Union. In the bend after the old fruit orchard, a path goes straight up to the forest and cuts through the stream then veers to the left. After 10 minutes you reach the forest path that then curves left on the trail. After 1.5 hours, the trail snakes through the forest up to the ridge when it turns right and you’ll soon come out onto a mountain pasture. Keep going straight and you’ll go past the ruins of the Granges de Lullin. Further along, follow directions to "Pontets" and the road goes left and downhill. Continue straight on and after 30 minutes you’ll reach the Mouilles plateau with the Hirmentaz resort in front of you.
When you reach Pontets, take the road on the right. Just before the crossroads with the D32, the path goes down to the right to "Talonay", "Chez le Rey" and Lullin. Follow the yellow markings straight back to the starting point (partly road, partly path).
